Native ponies as used by the Romans in Britain

Connemara Pony--originates from the West Coast of Ireland.  Height ranges up to 14.2hh.  Any whole colour, but grey most prolific colour.  Versatile and nimble pony. (TRACEY AND TRAJAN)

Fell Pony-- ancestors originate from Friesian horses imported by the Romans during the construction of Hadrian's Wall. Height ranges up to 14hh.  Colours: black, brown and occasionally grey. Strong, hardy pony. (TRACEY AND DARIUS)

The Romans also used Exmoor, Highland and Shetland ponies, these ponies were used for a variety  of  activities . The Exmoor and Highland ponies for riding, driving and as pack ponies. The Shetlands  for  pack  ponies  and for pulling small loads. One very important  point  to  remember is that when the Romans came to Britannia they would have used the local Native Ponies. These ponies are agile and strong.  They  can  also cover long  distances, their short legs help them to negotiate the steep and rough terrain that they had been born into. They keep their condition well and grow a thick coat in winter to protect them against wind, rain and snow. These ponies are all as versatile today as they would have been in the past.
